Our story.
CyberVista, now N2K, was founded in 2016, but our history reaches back nearly 85 years. This is our story.
1938 - Kaplan Founded
1984 - The Washington Post Company acquires Kaplan
2003 - SelfTest and Transcender join Kaplan

2022 - CyberVista becomes an N2K brand
1938 - Kaplan Founded
Stanley Kaplan starts tutoring students in the basement of his parents’ Brooklyn home. Many of his students were from immigrant families, eager to pursue higher education and achieve success in America.
Today, Kaplan is one of the world’s largest and most diverse education providers—with 12,000 employees working across 28 countries—serving individuals, businesses and universities worldwide.
1984 - The Washington Post Company acquires Kaplan
Kaplan, now with over 100 centers around the US, is acquired by The Washington Post Company. The Washington Post Company became the Graham Holdings Company following the sale of The Washington Post in 2013.
2003 - SelfTest and Transcender join Kaplan
SelfTest Software and Transcender were both founded in 1992. Kaplan Professional acquired SelfTest Software in 1999, followed by Transcender in 2003, creating the largest IT test prep business in the industry.
2016 - CyberVista launches at CES
CyberVista, now N2K, launched at CES in 2016 with the mission of solving the skills gap across the cybersecurity workforce. Leveraging over 80 years of high-quality assessments and learning science methodologies, N2K set out to change the way that organizations improve the knowledge, skills, and abilities of their valued team members.
2018 - Kaplan IT Training joins CyberVista
Kaplan IT Training joins forces with CyberVista, now N2K, as a single company in October 2018. Together as one company, CyberVista moves forward to forge a successful path for the future of the cybersecurity workforce for both practitioners as well as the organizations that they empower and defend.
2022 - CyberVista becomes an N2K brand
The CyberWire and CyberVista merged to form N2K Networks. As the world’s first news to knowledge network, N2K’s goal is to help enterprises and professionals get up the learning curve fast and then keep them there. Our imperative is to ensure that cybersecurity executives and practitioners know their teams, know their stuff, and know the latest in the industry.

Simone Petrella
Simone Petrella is President and Co-Founder of N2K and CyberVista, now N2K. Previously, Simone was a Senior Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton where she helped build the firm’s cybersecurity practice in the commercial sector focusing on the creation of cyber fusion centers and the integration of cyber threat intelligence, security operations, and cyber defense operations into effective cyber security operations. For a decade she led the firm’s all source cyber threat intelligence business in the national security and Defense sectors, where she built out a threat capability and team with in depth subject matter expertise in all aspects of cyber threat intelligence, including intelligence support to both defensive and offensive operations. Her areas of specialty included predictive cyber intelligence based on an understanding of the threat adversary and developing service offerings to integrate intelligence into exercises to provide realistic cyber scenarios.
Simone received her J.D. with honors from Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law and graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A. in Government and a M.A. in International Law and Policy. She is a member of Women in International Security and is admitted to the New York Bar. A native of New Jersey, she has resided in Washington D.C. since 2000.
Jeff Welgan
Biography
As Chief Learning Officer, Jeff Welgan oversees N2K’s learning content and services. Focused on leading a data-driven approach to cybersecurity workforce development and training, Jeff and his product team strive to strengthen organizations by providing IT, cybersecurity, and cyber-enabled professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an ever-changing and evolving industry.
Formally trained in Threat Intelligence, Jeff carries over a decade’s worth of experience supporting intelligence agencies and collaborating with leaders across private, public and government sectors. More recently, Jeff has specialized in enterprise cyber workforce solutions and executive & board-level cyber risk training. As a decorated US Navy Veteran and former Search and Rescue Swimmer, Jeff believes in leading from the front and empowering teams to excel beyond expectation.
Jeff holds a B.A. in Political Science from the Clarion University of Pennsylvania and an M.S. in Applied Intelligence from Mercyhurst University. He’s also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and is a member of the Private Directors Association’s cyber oversight board.
Patrick Mullan
Biography
Patrick Mullan joined the N2K executive team in 2019 as Vice President of Sales and is thrilled to be helping organizations navigate and address the cybersecurity skills gap to create a cyber-ready workforce. Patrick is a highly organized, innovative thinker, who excels at leading teams through challenging projects. His drive to succeed plays a significant role in his proactive ability to work with customers to identify problems and implement a solution-focused approach to developing corrective measures.
During his twelve years previously at Bloomberg Industry Group, Patrick exemplified the qualities of a transformative sales leader – consistently spearheading innovative initiatives to increase revenue, reduce costs and enhance the overall bottom line.
Patrick received both his BA in English and MBA with a specialization in Management from Fairfield University. A native of Connecticut, he is an avid New York sports fan who now resides in Arlington, VA with his wife and two children.
Breanne Winter
Biography
Breanne Winter serves as N2K’s Vice President of Operations, implementing and streamlining new processes to help drive the company to the forefront of the industry.
She brought a conceptual and strategic mindset to the organization when she first joined as an Academic Operations Manager, overseeing all administration and implementation for N2K courses. Her adaptable and results-oriented leadership built through her previous roles in academia and volunteerism within the DC community, positioned her seamlessly as VP of Operations.
Breanne graduated from Bridgewater College with a BS in Business Administration and received her MBA from the University of Phoenix, in addition to earning an Executive Certificate in Leadership from the Jack Welch Management Institute.
